چکیده

The spatial and temporal effects of hot seawater (60-70oC) from a power station on nearby soft-bottom communities were analyzed in the protected area “Sebadales del sur de Tenerife” (SE coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, NE Atlantic Ocean). Sediment samples were taken during summer 2003 and winter 2004 from 12 to 20 m depth. The highest macrofaunal abundance and species richness were found in the turbines. A particular community, characterized by the polychaetes Aponuphis bilineata and sabellids of the genus Chone and the amphipod Photis longicaudata, inhabited the surroundings of the power station turbines, which differed from the remaining studied stations. The continuous current from sea effluent was the main responsible of the macrofaunal community structure in nearby sediments since no measurable responses to thermal disturbance were detected.

Influence of atmospheric circulation patterns on dust transport during Harmattan Period in West Africa

This study has used TOMS AI as well as the reanalysis dataset of thirty-four years (1979-2012) to investigate the influence of atmospheric circulation on dust transport during the Harmattan period in West Africa, using Aerosol Index (AI) data, obtained from various satellite sensors. Changes in Inter-Tropical Discontinuity (ITD), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Gulf of Guinea, and North ...

Protected areas in the Atlantic facing the hazards of micro-plastic pollution: first diagnosis of three islands in the Canary Current.

Coastal zones and the biosphere as a whole show signs of cumulative degradation due to the use and disposal of plastics. To better understand the manifestation of plastic pollution in the Atlantic Ocean, we partnered with local communities to determine the concentrations of micro-plastics in 125 beaches on three islands in the Canary Current: Lanzarote, La Graciosa, and Fuerteventura. We found ...

LIMPETS versus WILD MUSSELS: Tool for monitoring metals in the Canary Islands (Spain)

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MFSD, 2008/56/EC), is the main instrument for the protection of the marine environment in Europe. According to the MSFD’s descriptor 8, the concentrations of contaminants should be at levels not giving rise to pollution effects. The Spanish initial assessment of the quality status of their national marine waters by the end of 2012, for compliance with MF...

The study of microanatomy of intestinal epithelium in the Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis)

The microanatomy of the intestinal epithelium in the Chinese soft-shelled turtle (CST) was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The small intestinal epithelium (SIE) was single layered or pseudostratified. The enterocytes contained mitochondria or mitochondria and lipid droplets. The enterocytes were arranged tightly in the apical parts of epithelium and connected by des...
